Description:

This course provides authoritative standardized training in the principles and practices of Library of Congress Classification (LCC). The course includes background on the development and structure of LCC and on the elements that make up a call number, as well as guidance in shelflisting practice and the use of essential tools. Emphasis is on basic skills and on application of LCC in areas most often used by generalists, including a special focus on schedules H, N, and P. The workshop concludes with a session on local decisions and on proposing new class numbers through SACO.

Intended Audience:

The course is designed to cover basic skills. It will be useful to those who are new to classificaiton using LCC but who have some basic knowledge of cataloging and the MARC 21 formats. While not designed to cover advanced or specialized topics, the course will also be a useful review for experienced catalogers, especially those who supervise or train other catalogers.
