The following projects are a few examples of the needs assessments and collection surveys that Preservation Services has conducted.

ALABAMA

  • Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Birmingham: A preservation assessment of collections of personal papers, organizational records, photographs, audiotapes, and videotapes relating to Birmingham's role in the Civil Rights Movement, 2000-2001.
  • Heart of Dixie RR Museum, Birmingham: A preservation assessment of books, photographs, and paper-based collections related to the history of railroads in Alabama and the United States, 2000-2001.
  • Historic Huntsville Foundation, Huntsville: A preservation assessment of paper-based collections that document the economic, cultural, and social life of 19th- and 20th-century Huntsville, AL, 2000-2001.
  • University of South Alabama Archives, Mobile: A preservation assessment of photographic and video collections relating to the legal, political, social, industrial, and Civil Rights history of 19th- and 20th-century southern Alabama, 2000-2001
  • Tuskegee University, Tuskegee: A preservation assessment of archives, manuscripts, and books related to the institutional history of the university as well African-American history from the 1600s to the late 20th century, 2002-2003.

FLORIDA

  • Fairchild Tropical Garden, Miami: A preservation assessment of maps, photographs, and blueprints that document the social and environmental history of Miami, Coral Gables, and Miami-Dade County, 2000-2001.
  • St. Petersburg Jr. College, St. Petersburg: A preservation assessment to develop a long-range plan to preserve archives of community colleges that document 20th-century African American, social, and civil rights history in Florida, 2001-2002. A preservation workshop for the staff of the college library and the purchase of archival supplies to preserve collections that document the institutional history of two junior colleges, 2002-2003. A preservation assessment on environmental and facilities planning, 2003-2004.
  • University of South Florida, St. Petersburg: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving library collections that focus on the history of marine science that date from the 1500s to the 20th century, 2001-2002.

GEORGIA

  • Georgia Southern University, Statesboro: A preservation assessment of library collections, 2000-2001.
  • Young Harris College, Young Harris: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving paper-based and image collections that document the religious and social history of Georgia and North Carolina, 2001-2002.
  • Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta: A preservation assessment of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill collection, which contains resources for the study of the history of textile manufacture in the southeastern United States, 2002-2003.
  • Columbus State University, Columbus: A preservation assessment of the archives collection that documents the history of Columbus and the surrounding Chattahoochee Valley, 2003-2004.

KENTUCKY

  • Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia: A preservation assessment of books and audiotapes and paper-based collections that are related to the history of the college, 2000-2001.
  • Berea College, Berea: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving collections of books, archival materials, and audio recordings pertaining to the history and culture of Appalachia, 2001-2002.
  • Pikeville College: A preservation assessment to develop a long-range plan to preserve collections that document social, cultural, educational, literary, and genealogical history of the Kentucky mountains, 2001-2002. Purchase of environmental monitors and controls, react packs for disaster preparedness, and storage furniture, all as recommended by a consultant who conducted a 2001 preservation assessment, 2002-2003.
  • Campbellsville University, Campbellsville, KY: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan to preserve library and archival collections that focus on military and religious history, 2001-2002.
  • Georgetown College, Georgetown: A preservation assessment to develop a long-range plan to preserve documents and artifacts related to the culture, folklore, economics, social, religious, and military history, and the history of education in Kentucky, 2001-2002.
  • Louisville Free Public Library, Louisville: A preservation assessment for the Louisville and Kentucky history collections, 2004.

LOUISIANA

  • Nunez Community College, Chalmette: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan to preserve archival collections documenting the college and its community in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, 2001-2002.

MISSISSIPPI

  • Mary Holmes College, West Point: A preservation assessment of archives and books related to the college's institutional history as well as materials on sharecroppers in Mississippi, the Civil Rights Movement, and African-American life in the South since the 1890s, 2002-2003.

NORTH CAROLINA

  • Warren Wilson College, Asheville: Preservation needs assessment and long-range planning to preserve paper-based collections, sound recordings, and photographic collections related to the history and culture of the college and the Appalachian region , 2001-2002.
  • Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, NC: A preservation needs assessment to develop a long-range plan for care of library collections related to the religious and Native American history and literature of Appalachia, 2002-2003.

PUERTO RICO

  • Municipio Autonomo de Ponce, Ponce: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan to preserve an archival collection that documents the life of Ponce, PR, since 1696, 2001-2002.

SOUTH CAROLINA

  • University of South Carolina, Columbia: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving a collection of rare books related to the history of medicine in the 19th century, 2001-2002.
  • Winthrop University, Rock Hill: The attendance of library preservation staff at five classes provided by Southeastern Library Network , Inc., and purchase of equipment to monitor the environment of collections related to history, literature, and culture, 2001-2002.


TENNESSEE

  • Milligan College, Milligan: A preservation assessment of the college's library and archives collections relating to local, social, industrial, and religious history, 2000-2001.
  • East Tennessee State University, Johnson City: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving a moving image collection pertaining to the history and culture of Appalachia, 2001-2002.
  • Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens: A preservation assessment to develop a long-term plan for preserving library and archival collections that are related to the history of religion and the history of education in Tennessee, 2001-2002.


VIRGINIA

  • Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Richmond: A preservation needs assessment of its collections and the drafting of a long-range plan for the care of materials in all media, 2002-2003.
